Here are a few of the benefits of having a healthy diet:

Controls weight:

Eating a balanced, calorie-managed diet can help control weight. When you start the day with a healthy breakfast, you avoid becoming overly hungry later. This could send you running to get fast food before lunch. Make sure you eat the majority of your calories in meals instead of snacks because you could end up eating a lot more snacks than expected.

Combats diseases:

Healthy habits help prevent certain health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. If you take care of yourself, you can keep your cholesterol and blood pressure within a safe range. This keeps your blood flowing smoothly, decreasing your risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Boosts energy:

Eating healthy foods will help boost your energy throughout the day, therefore you won’t have to spend money on that daily coffee to keep you going, which can have a very bad effect on your sleep then it all turns into a vicious cycle! Eating fast food every day will result in you feeling tired and drained all the time, we all know that horrible feeling you get after eating loads of junk food!

So at this point, you may be asking what foods do I eat to have a healthy/balanced diet?

Well here’s what a balanced diet should include:

  • 5 a day: You should always make sure you are eating your five a day, this includes 5 portions of fruit or vegetables!
  • A variety of starchy foods: Starchy foods should make up just over one-third of everything we eat – they include foods like potatoes, pasta, and bread!
  • Milk and dairy foods (or other alternatives): Milk and dairy foods such as cheese and yogurt are very good sources of protein. They also contain calcium, which helps keep your bones healthy.
  • Beans, fish, eggs, and meats such as chicken, beef etc. All these foods are very high in protein which is essential for your body to grow and repair. These foods are also high in essential minerals and vitamins!
  • Some oils and spreads: Fat is very important in having a balanced diet but you much keep it to a limited amount. It’s important to get most of our fat from unsaturated oils and spreads. Swapping to unsaturated fats can help to lower cholesterol, Too much-saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood, which increases your risk of developing heart disease. Also regularly consuming foods and drinks high in sugar increases your risk of obesity and tooth decay.

Plants based proteins are naturally high in all of the essential fatty acids the body needs whereas animal-based whey protein has no essential good fats! The fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid). They are known as essential fatty acids because the human body cannot produce them.

Also, plant protein contains no dairy, soy or lactose! Which means anyone can consume them. Another thing would be that plant protein is pure, meaning it hasn’t had anything added to them, for example, artificial colors or sugars!

It comes as a power which can be used to make smoothies or other drinks, or it comes as tablets!

Before we move on to our next superfood I want to explain a little bit more in detail why protein and these essential fatty acids are important!

Why is protein important in your diet?

Protein is very important because most of the human body is made up of protein! Organs, tissues, muscles, and hormones are all made up of proteins. Protein is used by every part of your body to help you develop and grow. It is important that you make sure you consume a good amount of protein every day for your body to function properly. Studies show that eating a high-protein diet has loads of amazing health benefits. Not only does it help you maintain and lose weight, but it also works to stabilize your blood sugar levels, improve your ability to concentrate and boost your energy levels, even more, it also supports your muscles and bones!

There’s a little bit on why protein is essential in your diet, and the best thing is all these superfoods are very high in protein so you will get all these benefits from consuming them on a daily basis.

Why are alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid important in your diet?

The body can synthesize most of the fats it needs. However, two essential fatty acids, linoleic and alpha-linolenic, cannot be synthesized in the body and must be obtained from food. These basic fats, found in plant foods, are used to build specialized fats called omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are important in the normal functioning of all tissues of the body.

Not getting enough of these essential fatty acids can lead to loads of symptoms and disorders including abnormalities in the liver and the kidneys, reduced growth rates, decreased immune function, and even depression! On the other hand, consuming a good amount of the fatty acids on a daily basis can result in loads of health benefits.

You can learn a lot more about these two essential fatty acids here: www.pcrm.org/health/health-topics/essential-fatty-acids
